Will Catnip Calm a Cat?
Calmness is a state of serenity and peacefulness, a feeling that many of us have experienced at some point in our lives. In the realm of animals, there are many ways to induce calmness in cats. One of the most popular and effective methods is the use of catnip. In this article, we will explore the science behind catnip and its effects on cats, and provide some expert advice on how to use catnip to calm a cat.
What is Catnip?
Catnip, also known as Nepeta cataria, is a perennial herb that belongs to the mint family. It has been used for centuries in traditional medicine, and is still a popular ingredient in many cat treats and toys today. The plant contains a chemical called nepetalactone, which is responsible for its calming effects on cats.
The Science Behind Catnip
The nepetalactone in catnip binds to receptors in a cat’s nasal tissue and brain, causing a response that is often referred to as a "high". This response is similar to that experienced by humans when they are under the influence of certain medications, such as Valium. The effects of catnip can be short-lived, lasting only a few minutes, but they can be very potent.
How Catnip Affects Cats
Cats are highly sensitive to the effects of nepetalactone, and many experience a range of reactions, from mild excitement to intense euphoria. Here are some of the ways catnip can affect cats:
- Excitement and Playfulness: Cats are naturally curious and playful animals, and the presence of catnip can trigger a strong desire to play and run around.
- Reduced Stress: The calming effects of catnip can help to reduce stress and anxiety in cats, making them feel more relaxed and content.
- Improved Mood: Cats that are sensitive to catnip may experience improved mood and reduced irritability.
What Cats Like About Catnip
Cats have a unique sense of smell that is highly attuned to the presence of catnip. Here are some of the reasons why cats like catnip:
- Smell: Cats have scent glands on their faces, cheeks, and paws, and the smell of catnip is one of the strongest they have ever experienced.
- Touch: Cats are extremely sensitive to touch, and the gentle rubbing of catnip against their faces and bodies can be very appealing.
- Taste: Some cats may be able to taste the catnip, which can add to its appeal.
Using Catnip to Calm a Cat
If you’re looking to calm your cat, catnip is a great natural remedy to try. Here are some tips for using catnip to calm a cat:

Limitations of Catnip
While catnip can be a very effective way to calm a cat, there are some limitations to consider:
- Duration: The effects of catnip can last only a few minutes, so be prepared to repeat the process throughout the day.
- Intensity: Some cats may be more sensitive to catnip than others, so be prepared for a strong reaction.
- Variety: Not all cats will respond to catnip, and some may even dislike it.
