Who Owns Marvel Before Disney?
Early Years and Independent Productions
Marvel Comics was founded in 1939 by Martin Goodman as Timely Comics. The company was initially a small publisher of comic books, but it quickly gained popularity with the release of Captain America #1 in 1941. Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Steve Ditko were among the early creators who worked for Timely Comics, laying the foundation for the Marvel Universe.
Independent Productions and the Formation of Marvel Entertainment
In the 1960s, Timely Comics began to expand its operations, and in 1961, it was renamed Marvel Comics. The company continued to produce comic books, but it also started to explore other media, including television and film. Marvel Productions was established in 1963, and it was responsible for producing the first Marvel TV series, The Avengers, in 1964.
The Marvel Movie Era
In the 1970s, Marvel began to shift its focus towards film production. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby created the X-Men comic book series, which was adapted into the first film, X-Men, in 2000. The success of the X-Men film franchise led to the creation of other Marvel movies, including Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor.
Marvel Studios and the Disney Acquisition
In 2009, Marvel Entertainment was acquired by The Walt Disney Company for $4 billion. Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, and Avi Arad were among the key executives who joined Marvel Studios, which was established as a subsidiary of Disney.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)
The acquisition of Marvel Entertainment by Disney marked the beginning of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The first MCU film, Iron Man, was released in 2008, and it was followed by a series of interconnected films, including The Avengers, Iron Man 2, and Thor. The MCU has since become one of the most successful film franchises in history, with over $22 billion in box office revenue.
Marvel Studios’ Acquisition of 20th Century Fox
In 2019, Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, which included the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The acquisition was completed in 2021, and Marvel Studios is now responsible for producing all Marvel films, including the MCU.
