What is Scratch in Golf?
Scratch, in golf, refers to a score of zero on the course. Achieving a perfect score, also known as scratch, is extremely rare and requires a golfer to play with precision, accuracy, and strategy. Here’s what it takes to get scratch in golf:
Significant Points to Consider:
- Driving Distance and Accuracy: A golfer must have a strong driving stroke to generate enough distance to get the ball into the fairway.
- Course Layout and Strategy: The golfer must be aware of the course layout, including obstacles like bunkers, water hazards, and fairway bunkers.
- Par and Total Score: A golfer must be able to calculate their par rating and total score to ensure they’re playing at the right level.
How Scratch is Achieved:
- Birdie or Eagle on Par: A golfer must hit a birdie or eagle on par to get scratch.
- No Witnesses: The golfer must be the only one on the course to get scratch.
- No Penalty Points: The golfer must not have any penalty points, such as three-stick or hazard shot, to get scratch.
Achieving Scratch: A Look at the Numbers
- About 1 in 100,000: The chances of getting scratch are extremely low, with an estimated 1 in 100,000 chance of achieving a perfect score.
- Difficulty of 0.03%: To get scratch, a golfer must have a driving accuracy of 0.03% or less, and a putting stroke speed of 12.6 mph or less.
Golfers Working to Achieve Scratch
