Is the Outlander on Netflix?
A Matter of Confusion
The Outlander series, based on the novels by Diana Gabaldon, has been a global phenomenon since its release in 2014. With its unique blend of time travel, historical fiction, and romance, it has captivated audiences worldwide. However, for many viewers, this question has become a major source of frustration: is the Outlander on Netflix?
The Short Answer
Unfortunately, the answer is yes, the Outlander series is available on Netflix, but with some caveats. The series has been dubbed into multiple languages, including English, and is available to stream on the platform in the US and Canada. However, for users in the UK, Australia, and other countries where Netflix is not available, the answer is more complicated.
A Brief History of the Netflix Outlander
Before we dive into the current situation, it’s worth noting that the Netflix Outlander series was initially released in 2014. It consisted of 7 seasons, with a total of 65 episodes. The show was adapted from the first novel, "Outlander," which was published in 1991. Since then, Netflix has released 3 more seasons, each with 10 episodes.
The Problem with Netflix in the UK and Australia
For users in the UK and Australia, the Netflix Outlander series is not available for streaming. This is due to a complex issue known as "content licensing agreements." Netflix and the BBC, the distributor of the show in the UK, have a complex agreement that allows the BBC to keep the show exclusive to the BBC’s on-demand service, BBC iPlayer, in the UK. This means that Netflix in the UK cannot stream the show.
Similarly, in Australia, the show is not available for streaming on Netflix due to a similar agreement with the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation). The ABC has a deal with the BBC to distribute the show on its on-demand service, ABC iview, in Australia.
Alternative Streaming Options
In recent years, there have been rumors of a Netflix deal with the Outlander series. In 2020, it was reported that Netflix had acquired the rights to the show in the UK and Australia, but details were scarce. However, in 2022, it was confirmed that Netflix had indeed acquired the rights to stream the show in the UK and Australia.
The Pros and Cons of Netflix
Despite the availability of the Outlander series in some countries, there are still several reasons why Netflix may not be the best option for all Outlander fans. Here are some pros and cons to consider:
Pros:
- Global availability: Netflix is available in over 190 countries worldwide, making it a great option for international viewers.
- High-quality streaming: Netflix has invested heavily in improving its streaming quality, making the show look and feel better than ever.
Cons:
- Initial licensing issues: As mentioned earlier, Netflix is not available in the UK and Australia due to licensing agreements with the BBC and ABC.
- Limited content: While Netflix has expanded its content offerings, the Outlander series is still not widely available in these countries.
- Content fees: Netflix charges content creators high fees to stream their content, which may not be feasible for smaller studios or producers.
The Verdict
In conclusion, while the Outlander series is available on Netflix in some countries, the availability is limited and often depends on the country and region. For users in the UK, Australia, and other countries where Netflix is not available, there are alternative streaming options available.
