Is Deadfall on Netflix?
What is Deadfall?
Deadfall is a true-crime documentary series that premiered on Netflix in 2021. The series is based on the book "Deadfall: In Pursuit of the Monster of Massachusetts" by Ryan Pecknold, which tells the story of the Belle Isle case. The case was a brutal and shocking murder that took place in 1987 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
The Story Behind Deadfall
The Belle Isle case was one of the most infamous unsolved murders in American history. The victim was 18-year-old Patty Hearst, the daughter of wealthy businessman H.R. Hearst. On September 5, 1987, Patty and her friend Siegfried Gilliam were driving on the Mass Pike in Northampton when they were stopped by police. The officer, Paul Byrnes, attempted to rob them, and in the ensuing struggle, Gilliam was shot and killed. Patty was also injured.
The Investigation and Trial
The police investigation was one of the largest in the state’s history, with over 30 police officers and investigators involved. However, the case was plagued by fake evidence, cover-ups, and inconsistencies that raised suspicions about the investigation.
The trial was a sensationalized media event, with many outlets covering the case. However, the prosecution’s case was ultimately rejected due to lack of evidence. The defense team, led by Donald Tatum, argued that the prosecution had withheld evidence and witness testimony.
The Netflix Series
The Netflix series Deadfall is a more recent adaptation of the true story. The series follows Ryan Pecknold, a true-crime writer, as he delves into the Belle Isle case. Pecknold’s research and interviews with investigators and witnesses provide a fresh perspective on the case.
