The Chipmunks’ Disney+ Debut
In recent years, the world of music and entertainment has seen a surge in the popularity of nostalgic franchises. One such franchise that has been making waves is the beloved cartoon series, Alvin and the Chipmunks. The original series, which debuted in 1983, was created by Ross Bagdasarian Sr. and was originally intended to be a novelty act. However, the show’s popularity led to the creation of two sequels, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel (2009) and Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked (2011).
The Disney+ Era
In 2019, Disney+ announced its plans to acquire the rights to the Alvin and the Chipmunks franchise. The acquisition was a significant move for the streaming service, as it marked the first time Disney had acquired a major franchise in the music and entertainment space. The acquisition was finalized in 2020, and Disney+ has since released a series of animated shorts and specials featuring the Chipmunks.
