How to Dispose of a Monitor: A Step-by-Step Guide
Preparation is Key
Before we dive into the process of disposing of a monitor, it’s essential to prepare yourself and your environment. Make sure you have the necessary equipment and materials:
- A working computer or device to transfer the monitor to
- A power source for the monitor
- A cable to connect the monitor to the computer
- A trash bag or recycling bin
- A computer or device to transfer the monitor to (if you’re planning to sell or give it away)
Choosing the Right Disposal Method
There are several options for disposing of a monitor, and the best one for you will depend on the type of monitor and its condition. Here are some common methods:
- Recycling: Many computer manufacturers and retailers offer recycling programs for old monitors. Check with your manufacturer or retailer to see if they have a program in place.
- Electronic Waste (E-Waste) Recycling: Some retailers and manufacturers offer E-Waste recycling programs. These programs will collect and recycle your monitor, and you may be eligible for a discount on your next purchase.
- Drop-off Locations: Many retailers and manufacturers have designated drop-off locations for E-Waste. These locations will accept your monitor and recycle it responsibly.
- Specialty Recycling Centers: Some specialty recycling centers specialize in electronic waste and may accept your monitor.
Disassembling the Monitor
Before you can dispose of your monitor, you’ll need to disassemble it. This will depend on the type of monitor and its condition. Here are some general steps to follow:
- Unplug the monitor: Make sure the monitor is unplugged and the power cord is removed.
- Remove the bezel: The bezel is the plastic or metal cover that surrounds the monitor. Remove it by unscrewing the screws that hold it in place.
- Remove the stand: The stand is the metal or plastic base that holds the monitor in place. Remove it by unscrewing the screws that hold it in place.
- Remove the cables: The cables are the wires that connect the monitor to the computer. Remove them by disconnecting the connectors.
Disposing of the Monitor’s Components
Once you’ve disassembled the monitor, you’ll need to dispose of its components. Here are some common items to consider:
- Cables: Cables are made up of multiple wires and connectors. You can recycle them or dispose of them in a responsible manner.
- Circuit boards: Circuit boards are the printed circuit boards (PCBs) that contain the monitor’s electronics. You can recycle them or dispose of them in a responsible manner.
- Motherboard: The motherboard is the main circuit board of the monitor. You can recycle it or dispose of it in a responsible manner.
- Power supply: The power supply is the component that provides power to the monitor. You can recycle it or dispose of it in a responsible manner.

|---|---|
| Cables | Recycle or dispose of in a responsible manner |
| Circuit boards | Recycle or dispose of in a responsible manner |
| Motherboard | Recycle or dispose of in a responsible manner |
| Power supply | Recycle or dispose of in a responsible manner |
Disposing of the Monitor’s Electronic Components
Once you’ve disassembled the monitor, you’ll need to dispose of its electronic components. Here are some common items to consider:
- Wires: Wires are made up of multiple conductors and insulators. You can recycle them or dispose of them in a responsible manner.
- Capacitors: Capacitors are used to store energy in the monitor’s circuitry. You can recycle them or dispose of them in a responsible manner.
- Resistors: Resistors are used to control the flow of energy in the monitor’s circuitry. You can recycle them or dispose of them in a responsible manner.
