The Number of Speakers of the House: A Guide to the Legislative Body
The United States Congress is a bicameral legislative body, consisting of two chambers: the House of Representatives and the Senate. The House of Representatives is the lower chamber, and it is responsible for conducting the business of the government, including the passage of laws and the approval of presidential appointments. In this article, we will explore the number of Speakers of the House, the history of the position, and some key facts about the role of the Speaker.
A Brief History of the Speaker
The Speaker of the House is the presiding officer of the House of Representatives, and the second-highest-ranking official in the chamber. The position has its roots in the early days of the American colonies, when the House of Representatives was first established in 1789. The first Speaker of the House was John Langdon (1789-1791), who was elected by the House of Representatives.
Over time, the position evolved, and the Speaker became a more formalized role. In 1795, John Adams was elected as the first Speaker of the House, and he served in this position until 1797. Thomas Jefferson was elected as the second Speaker of the House in 1797, and he served until 1801.
