Does Gatsby Live in West Egg?
F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby, is a timeless classic that has been baffling readers and scholars alike for generations. One of the most persistent and intriguing questions that has emerged from the novel is: where does Gatsby live? The answer, however, is not as straightforward as it seems. In this article, we will delve into the world of Gatsby’s abode and explore the multiple possibilities, concluding with a definitive answer to whether Gatsby indeed lives in West Egg.
The Two Enclaves: East Egg and West Egg
In the novel, Gatsby’s residence is situated in one of the two enclaves – East Egg and West Egg – that are nestled in the midst of Long Island, New York. The two enclaves are separate and distinct, each with its own unique character and atmosphere. East Egg is the domain of the old-money Settles and Vanderbuilt families, while West Egg is the chosen abode of the self-made rich and the nouveau riche.
The Great Gatsby’s Mysterious Address
Gatsby’s address, 5th Avenue, Suite B, Apartment 2, is a source of endless fascination and speculation. The suite number and apartment number are not explicitly stated, leaving readers to wonder whether Gatsby indeed resides in either East or West Egg. The address seems to be deliberately vague, hinting at the elusiveness and mystery that surrounds Gatsby’s personal life.
The Case for West Egg
Several pieces of evidence suggest that Gatsby might be residing in West Egg:
- West Egg is the domain of the self-made rich: Gatsby, a self-made millionaire, would be more likely to reside in West Egg, which is home to the nouveau riche and the newly wealthy.
- Gatsby’s love for the excess and extravagance: West Egg, with its glitz and glamour, would be the perfect setting for Gatsby’s love of luxury and display of wealth.
- The proximity to New York City: West Egg’s proximity to New York City would allow Gatsby to maintain his connection to the city and its vibrant nightlife, which is essential for his social calendar.
The Case for East Egg
On the other hand, some arguments suggest that Gatsby might be residing in East Egg:
- The socially accepted and refined atmosphere: East Egg, with its pretentious and refined atmosphere, would be a more suitable setting for Gatsby’s desire to impress Daisy and win her back.
- The influence of the old-money crowd: Gatsby’s attempt to infiltrate the old-money circle by marrying Daisy would be facilitated by residing in East Egg, where he would be surrounded by the established elite.
- The historically significant location: East Egg has historical significance, having been the home of the wealthy and influential Vanderbuilt family, making it a suitable location for Gatsby’s grand ambitions.
Conclusion: Does Gatsby Live in West Egg?
After examining the evidence, it is clear that both East and West Egg have valid claims to being Gatsby’s residence. However, if we consider the novel’s themes, character development, and plot, the case for West Egg is stronger. Gatsby’s desire for excess, his self-made status, and his connection to New York City all point to West Egg as his likely abode.
Table: Gatsby’s Address in the Context of East and West Egg

|---|---|---|

| Atmosphere | Refined, pretentious | Extravagant, glamorous |
| Location | Proximity to New York City | Proximity to New York City |
