More than Just a Novel
The movie takes creative liberties with the original novel, but it does stay true to the core theme of the book. The film follows the lives of three maids, having faced racism and oppression since the Civil War. The Results:
- The maids are seen as low-class and inferior, with little respect from the white families.
- The maids work long hours for minimal pay, while the white families live in luxury.
- The maids’ children are seen as inferior to the white children, with limited access to education and healthcare.
- The maids are subjected to physical and emotional abuse, with little or no support from the white families.
A Symbolic Approach
The movie uses a symbolic approach to show the dehumanizing effect of racism. The maids are not just victims of racism, but also true African Americans, with their own experiences and perspectives. By portraying the maids as ordinary people with extraordinary experiences, the movie challenges the viewer’s perceptions of African Americans.
