Peak salmon run is the time for action.  With the fish run at it’s peak, the bears congregate at the rivers gorging on fish.   When it hot, it’s non-stop action panning with this bear and then that one as they charge up and down the river with us strategically placed in a safe location where we don’t disrupt their fishing.  It’s about as exciting as wildlife photography can get!

Our adventure takes us to the Katmai coast where we live in a comfortable lodge with each participant having their own cabin.  With gourmet meals to sustain us throughout the day and a picnic lunch in the field we don’t go hungry and in fact, even with all the walking we do, I manage to add a pound or two each visit.

Cost of Adventure: $8450.00 (Single Occupancy)

Included in the cost adventure:
Transportation to the lodge and back from Kodiak, all transportation by boat within the park (Katmai NP), lodging (single occupancy), all gourmet meals, expert bear guides and boat captains and my personal instruction.

Not included in the cost of the adventure:
Transportation to Kodiak from your home base, first night lodging in Kodiak and tips for our amazing guides.

Terms:
A non-refundable deposit of $1000.00 is required to hold your spot with the balance due 90 days prior to the adventure (unless otherwise specified in the adventure descriptions).  Within the 90 day time period no refund will be issued unless your spot can be filled at which point a refund less the non-refundable deposit will be issued.  Life happens, best laid plans go awry.  I strongly recommend trip insurance!

I have used Travel Insured and found them to be good to work with.   1-800-243-2440

*Note: There is a good amount of walking involved in this adventure.  We travel by boat to our locations and then disembark into the water in waders/hip boots and cross mud flats.  While it is not extremely difficult (I have had all ages and degrees of fitness) a certain degree of fitness is required to navigate your way around.

Itinerary

Day 1, Sat Aug 10
Arrive in Kodiak, AK by early afternoon (I strongly suggest coming in a bit early to give yourself a cushion in case of Alaska weather).  The hotel will send a car for you.  Once everyone has arrived, we will have dinner and go over the itinerary for the upcoming week and get to know each other.  Overnight in Kodiak.

Day 2, Sun Aug 11
After a hearty breakfast we will load up and wait for our ride from Andrew Air to shuttle us to the floatplane docks.  The flight to the lodge is a scenic 45-50 minutes.
Upon arriving at the lodge everyone is shown to their cabin to get settled in.  A delicious lunch is waiting (one of many wonderful meals) and afterwards we head off on our first sight seeing excursion around the bay.  We return each evening in time to freshen up and relax in the lodge recounting our day while we download our images.

Day 3, Mon Aug 12-Day 8 Sat Aug 17
Each morning we begin our day with a hearty breakfast and then depending on the tides, we walk a few steps down the beach to the boat or we take the scenic, long trail through the woods to the boats.  There are two boats with nice cabins, bathrooms and good deck area to shoot from.  We will have the exclusive use of the entire lodge and both boats during our stay.  Our focus is on fishing bears and if the run is hot we will be at the rivers all day every day.  If there is a lull in the fishing we have opportunity to explore farther afield.  We typically stay out all day taking a picnic lunch to be eaten during a lull in bear activity.  Evenings are spent enjoying a wonderful meal, downloading images, cleaning equipment and enjoying the comforts of the lodge and each others company.

Day 9, Sun June 16
Everything is packed and ready to go by breakfast.  We take a last sight seeing ride around the bay and back to the lodge or our meeting point for the plane.  A last meal is eaten while waiting for our ride back to civilization and reality.  Arrive Kodiak mid afternoon, depart for Anchorage and home.
