We Found Foxes!!!

How can you not love a simple holiday drive with friends (and my trusty camera) when you come across a fox sitting near the road.  You slowly approach and see another, and another, wait there are four, no, five kits!  OMG!  We found a fox den!!!…

At first they all disappeared into the rocks (their den).  All except mom who lay nearby unconcerned at my presence…

I slowly approached (with my 24-120mm lens at 120mm) a little closer to the rocks and then sat down and waited.  It took less than sixty seconds before the first kit popped it’s head out, then another and another.  They looked at me, became a bit bolder and began inching closer a little at a time until, mom raised her head, made a little noise and they scampered back to the rocks…

She was a great mom and, while very tolerant of my presence she kept her kits wild and at a safe distance from people as she should.  I respected that and kept my own council and did not encourage the kits closer in any way.  I couldn’t believe our luck and even though I only had the 24-120mm lens with me, I got some great environmental images and some memories that I know will warm my heart every time I think of those darling little foxes!  Camera and exposure data: Nikon D4, AF-S 24-120mm f4 VR @ 120mm ISO 100 f8 @ 1/60 sec (all images, top image cropped to pano in Photoshop CS6).  NEF/RAW files processed in Nikon Capture NX2, finished in Photoshop CS6 using NIK Detail Extractor slightly on the foxes but, not on the background.

  2. Great shots. You were in the right place at the right time!

    • Thanks, Gary. Indded we were. When we went back at midday, they were pretty scarce and it would have been so easy to miss them all together. It’s funny, how the more I’m out, the luckier I get. :)

  3. That is so exciting when Nature shows her face when you least expect it. It pays to keep a watchful eye.

  4. Cool!
