Story behind the image…

So many photo opportunities are fleeting and having your camera ready can make the difference between getting the shot or not.  Such was the case as we drove along the road in Lamar Valley Yellowstone when an Ermine ran across the road in front of us with a mouse/vole in it’s mouth.  I hit the breaks, pulled over and looked to see where it had gone.  It popped up in the snow right in front of us.  Luckily it was on the side of the road that allowed everyone to roll their windows down and open the van door and shoot from the vehicle.  Everyone quickly got their cameras up and began firing.

The little guy kept disappearing into the snow only to pop up somewhere else like playing the game Wack A Mole.  I didn’t have a clear view from inside the van so, once everyone had a number of images, I very carefully opened the van door, slipped out and using the hood of the car to brace myself and as a blind, I was able to capture several images before he disappeared into the snow one last time and was gone.  Image captured with Nikon D3S, AF-S 600mm f4 VR  ISO 200 f5.6 @ 1/2000 sec.
