Excellent Photo Adventures…Churchill Polar Bears 4

Our week in Churchill was an amazing experience.  We were fortunate to enjoy the arctic at it’s best.  The freeze was just starting when we arrived and throughout the week we experienced temps in the minus thirties (that’s farenheit) with wind chill and we saw the ice forming on Hudson Bay right before our eyes.  We learned that the wind direction played a big role in the freeze.  South winds were warmer and pushed the ice out of the bay and north winds were colder and pushed the ice back into the bay.  It was something to see ice as far as the eye could see one day and then see breaks the next.  We viewed a foreground of ice on Tuesday night when photographing the northern lights and crashing waves on Thursday night from the exact same location.

It looks like the freeze is coming to the Hudson Bay earlier than in recent years past.  That’s a good thing for the bears and it was a wonderful experience to share a short time in their world learning more about their behavior and enjoying many incredible photo opportunities.  Another Excellent Photo Adventure comes to an end…
