A Family Affair

Those of you who read my blog regularly know my love for photography comes from my parents and how I was weaned on metal Kodak film cans as a wee tot, received my first camera at the age of ten and have been immersed in photography ever since. I got into photography because of my parents influence and we have enjoyed so many years together adventuring across America photographing together.

While my father is no longer with us, my mom and I carried on the family tradition of photographing the winter waves at the coast while Frank patiently stuck it out with us. Enjoy a couple of images that my mom, Ramona Excell, captured…

Tech Tuesday Returns… Jan 3

That’s right…my much loved Tech Tuesday returns in 2012 and it’s bigger, better and filled with even more in depth content than ever! Each Tuesday I’ll share tip, trick, technique or piece of equipment that aids me in my creative journey and will hopefully help you as well. Stay tuned.

Surf’s Up

While it may not be a traditional Christmas for most people, spending the holidays at the Oregon coast has become a treasured tradition in my family. There is nothing like watching the power and beauty of the ocean as wave after wave makes it’s journey to shore and then retreats back into the ocean. Winter can be especially amazing with winter storms bringing big waves.
We enjoyed the show Mother Nature put on for us in light jackets. And put on a show she did! Just steps from our rented beach house was a panoramic view with sea stacks scattered across the horizon making for great foreground elements and for hard surfaces for the waves to crash against. Wanting to convey the power of the crashing waves, I used a telephoto to provide a tight, narrow field of view compressing the scene and keeping the focus on the wave action. I focused on a group of rocks that were close enough together to make an interesting composition and yet spaced far enough apart to allow the water to break in between adding to the visual depth.

I love the Southern Coast for big wave potential. I have several favorite locations to go when the surf is high so, after spending the morning in one location we loaded up and headed north to photograph more wave action…

I have my request in to the photo gods for more weather and wave action like we have had this week when Excellent Photo Adventures braves the elements to photograph Oregon Winter Waves in Feb, 2012
