Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta… It’s Not Just Balloons

While everyone comes to Albuquerque for the hot air balloons…

There are so many other great subjects to photograph. Take the Zebras, for instance. I’m not talking about the four legged kind but, the folks who wear black and white and are in charge of getting the balloons safely in the air. These folks not only do a great job but, they take their nickname to heart with all kinds of decorations to individualize their zebra-ness…

Then there is the fun center as I call it with rows of tasty treats and every kind of balloon souvenir imaginable. There are also a few carnival type games that light up nicely in the pre-dawn…

For those who want to explore the area, Od Town Albuquerque has a historic square where you can find little side alleys with the obligatory red chiles hanging from the doorways and along the paths…

And we had to get our kicks on Route 66 last night by visiting Central Avenue where there are remnants of days of old like the Kimo Theater…

Albuquerque Balloon Festival… The Adventure Continues

Mid-week at the Balloon Fiesta has a slower pace with fewer visitors and only morning activities but, the photo opportunities still abound. Trying to find some different compositions I attached my ultra wide 14-24mm and got inside the balloons looking for interesting colors and patterns. I found a smiley face that I simply couldn’t resist…

The morning began with some amazing clouds at first light but, the wind help up the launch. There were still some nice cloud formations once the balloons hit the air and I looked for a composition that showed a balloon soaring above the clouds to convey the great heights they soar to…

When photographing the many balloons dotting the skies, I look for interesting patterns. To capture visual depth I need balloons at varying distances and I also look to avoid merges as much as possible. When I saw the foreground balloon moving into the top left of the frame I zoomed in a bit tighter to capture just the basket as the balloon entered my viewfinder. Native Dances

The Indian Pueblo Cultural Center is celebrating Balloon Fiesta Week with Native Dances. It’s a great way to while away a few hours during the day and work on creative blurs, flash fill technique, stop action, etc. I have wanted to try some blurs of native dancers for quite some time and really enjoyed the challenge of getting just the right amount of blur. I almost nailed it…guess another visit is in order to try again. Stay tuned.
