Yellowstone Fall Splendor

I love fall in Yellowstone. The grasses and trees have begun to turn warm shades of yellow, orange and red which is a beautiful setting for wildlife. The elk are in their prime and look great in the grasses. I left West Yellowstone in time to get to a location that I had selected the night before for first light and sure enough, the same bull was there with his harem. I moved into a place where the light would be good when they rose. They were laying down when I arrived but the cows got up and began grazing and as they got farther from the bull he began bugling and rose to follow them stopping at the river for a drink before crossing…

Once he reached the other side he began bugling again and followed the cows into the forest disappearing from sight…

It was a great start to the morning and I packed up and headed on. My plan was to drive the upper loop to see what I could find. As I was crossing the center road I passed a forest area where the underbrush was all turning and backlit making it glow. A lot of people don’t care for backlit subjects but, fall color is one that I prefer backlit to front or sidelight to capture that glow…

I continued along the loop turning north towards Dunraven Pass and Tower Falls. It was getting later in the day and the light was poor and the wildlife most likely hunkered down in the shade somewhere. I kept going stopping along the way to enjoy the view. Once I made it to Mammoth I headed to a spot where I had heard there were Pica to try my luck. The photo gods were smiling as they not only produced a Pica for me but it was a very tolerant little guy who let me get within frame filling distance while he posed on the lichen covered rocks…

I was able to make both loops in the two days I have been in the park and feel like I have a good plan for the upcoming week. I know where the bears and wolves are being spotted now we just need to be there at the right time for all the elements to come together…good subject, good setting and good light. That can be a real challenge. I’m looking forward facing the challenge with my group this week and coming away with some wonderful images for our efforts. Stay tuned.

Fall + Yellowstone = Rut!

It’s the time of year in Yellowstone when the bull elk are at their prime. They are strutting their stuff, rounding up a harem of cow elk and pausing to pose for a photo now and then. (OK, they don’t really pose for a photograph but they sure do strike some nice poses)…

The girls are ready to gather but, not quite ready to make babies yet so, the bull gets pretty worked up thrashing in the grass to release some pent up energy and providing some great action…
